Three African American men are standing on the banks of the Tennessee River, just east of Ross’s Landing. One man is standing next to a water trough. His hands are resting on his hips. He is wearing a three-piece suit that is heavily worn and has rips at the knee and sleeves. He has a kerchief around his neck and a wide brimmed hat on his head. A younger man is standing next to him. He is wearing a three-piece suit that is in good condition and a hat that is pushed far back on his head. He is holding a wooden cane in his right hand. The third man is wearing striped pants and vest with a knee-length dark coat and smaller hat. He is holding the lapel of his coat in his left hand. Beyond them is several wooden structures, one has an open covered platform that extends out towards the river. In the distance is the Old County Bridge (replaced by the Walnut Street Bridge). The image dates to the early to mid-1890s.
