Catalog Number: 2017.040.0001
Date (Years): 1891-1900
Studio photograph of a man, a woman, and two young women. The man is sitting on the back of a chair with his feet on the chair seat. He is wearing a dark, three-piece suit, white shirt, and tie. There is a watch fob going from his vest button to vest pocket. He has a receding hairline. His hat is resting on his right foot. A woman stands next to the man, with a younger woman next to her. There is a young woman sitting in a chair next to the man. The three women are dressed in long, full skirts and tight fitted bodices made of a heavy-weight material. The bodices have tight sleeves, closely spaced buttons running down the front, and short collars with ruffles. The two women standing are wearing hats with feather embellishments. The woman sitting is not wearing a hat. On the floor is a striped rug and the studio backdrop suggests foliage in an enclosed garden. At the bottom, on the matboard, it says “Smith, Chattanooga, Tenn.” It is a mounted, small format image and the verso is blank.
